1633-1634 King Sebastiao I, Part 5
OK, so the answer to the question was..... we decide
to make Vijayanagar a Protectorate. We really don’t need the overextension now
of taking a load of new provinces, as we’ve spent a heap of admin power on
coring recently and are falling behind. WE automatically become the war leader
in Vijayanagar’s war against France
March 1633 – we engage the Froggies in battle
Destroying them over the next month. France now has
no troops east of the Cape of Good Hope, and we can take our time to recapture
the provinces occupied by France, and reposition our armies
Land forces are repositioned by both sides for the
next few years, avoiding battle but carrying out siege and counter-siege, but various
naval battles take place, such as...
1634-1637 King Antonio I
Suddenly in Dec 1634, King Sebastiao I dies after a
reign of 38 years. He took the throne back in the days before Granada was even
our vassal, let alone part of our home territory. His reign is most notable,
however, for our massive expansion in the East Indies, from a position of
challenging for control of the trade to being pretty much the only player in
the area. Our new King, Antonio I is actually slightly better statistically
than his Dad, with a more even spread of skills. His heir, however, is utterly
pants! Decent at filing, but with the diplomacy of Nigel Farage and the
military skill of a wet Kipper.
In May 1635, get a decision to either restrict our
colonies or expand them.... duh! In addition, most of the Indian provinces now
back under our control. If you are wondering why I don’t enact the Indian Trade
Company decision... there is a much better event called “Portuguese East Indian
Company” which can fire between 1600 and 1700 that I am waiting for. If I take
the ITC decision then the event can’t fire!
In June 1635 we take 2 Ideas, one from the Trade
group and one from the Quantity group
An interesting event fires in November 1636. We can
either give the nobility more control over church land, in exchange for a ton
of cash and more Papal Influence, but lose tax income for 20 years, or we can
deny them the control and keep the status quo. I choose to accept, as we don’t
need the tax income (it’s only about 30% of our monthly income), but we do need
the additional Papal Influence to help keep control of the Curia.
By Feb 1637 Australia is firmly in our control
Aha, some land action in May! Our West African army
finally comes into contact with some Frenchies. Despite lagging behind them in
military tech, our increased numbers allow us to win this battle
Which leads to several more victories
1637-1640 King Filipe II, Part 1
And then, oh! In September 1637 we get another new
King.... this is pants! I was looking forward to a few good yers of tech
advancement under King Antonio, but that has gone to pot with Filipe II being
such a klutz.... but his 4 year old heir is awesome!
Austria has somehow managed to diplomatically annex
Aragon, didn’t see that coming! Good job they are our staunchest ally!
But it never hurts to reaffirm ties
Jan 1638 - with the war going nowhere, we decide to end
it, taking 3 provinces in Africa from the French, some cash and forcing them to
end a couple of treaties
Admin tech 18 to celebrate
Southern Africa now looks like this
West Africa like this
Ethiopia becomes protectorate in February. You can
see an arc of light blue/aqua territories round the Somalian coastline. We have
protectorates all round the area, contributing to our trade power
The Ottomans declare war on Yemen in April. In and
of itself this doesn’t seem like much of an issue, but the bit The Ottomans have
declared war over is the province of Asir, which lies just south of Hedjaz,
bordering on our territories in the southwestern tip of Arabia. This could
spell trouble in the future.
GB wants Wales back in Nov 38... this war doesn’t
last long, or end well for the Welsh
Another Trade Idea in Jan 39, giving us an extra
merchant
We lose control of the Pope in July... this is
unfortunate!
More colonies in the East Indies...
And by December we are back in control of the Pope...
huzzah!
Fiji is ours.... great, somewhere to go on our hols!
And the former French colony of Whydah that we
nicked in the last war becomes self sustaining in May 1640. Note in the
background that Castile is expanding into some new areas!
Told you it wouldn’t end well for Wales
We take another Diplo tech level in Nov 1640
And that about wraps it up for this update. The last
7 years saw a protracted war with France, which was marked by extremely long
periods of inactivity by both sides. In the next update we’ll go from 1640 to
1650 and then follow it up with our usual 50 year intermission. I have a
feeling that the next 10 years won’t be as quiet as the previous 7 have been.
